Last October marked a significant milestone for PLASTINEST’s outreach mission. Our team members Vania and Isabel showcased our commitment to scientific education during Science Party 2023, introducing the scientific method and spotlighting plastic pollution in our coastal ecosystems.
At the Bordeaux Sciences Party, they facilitated an immersive workshop for middle school students. The session was both educational and hands-on, with the young participants employing scientific equipment to detect and understand the extent of plastic contamination in various water and sediment samples, mirroring the work of researchers in the field. The practical sessions emphasized the prevalence of plastic pollution and the importance of conserving our marine habitats.
The outreach efforts continued at the Hendaye Science Party, against the scenic setting of Hendaye Beach. Here, children brought samples they had collected from the sea on a sailing trip, guided by the association ‘Un océan des possibles expeditions.’ Participants, young and old, were eager to learn about the impact of plastics on our marine environments and what science is doing to protect them. The hands-on experience of analyzing actual water samples collected by these young explorers added a tangible and immediate connection to the issue.
Both events, interconnected in purpose, succeeded in inspiring the younger generation to become active guardians of our marine environment. We express our sincere thanks to R3 RIVAGES and ‘Un océan des possibles expeditions’ for facilitating these events and for their support.
This video summary from the Hendaye Beach event, provided by the host organization, captures the essence of our activities and the lively spirit of public science engagement.
